The Timpanogos High School Choir was determined to entertain their audience with an unexpected and innovative twist on a well-known classical piece, The William Tell Overture. In the middle of the overture, all the singers simultaneously turned their backs to the audience—except for one young lady who remained facing forward. Her wide-eyed expression, as though she had missed some critical cue, was enough to send giggles echoing throughout the auditorium.
The humor, however, was far from accidental. The apparent “miscue” was a carefully planned part of the performance, designed to catch the audience off guard and set the tone for what was to come. As the piece progressed, the choir began to weave more antics into their act. The students exaggerated their movements, pretended to forget parts of the choreography, and even incorporated playful gestures that seemed to poke fun at the grandeur of the original composition.
One particularly amusing moment came when the singers, still performing the overture with remarkable vocal accuracy, began to move in unison as though riding an imaginary horse—a nod to the galloping rhythm of the music. When all of the singers turned their backs on the audience, one young lady stayed facing front. That was the first burst of laughter from those seated.
But the joke was on the audience as the troop began their antics. That miscue for the missed turn was clearly staged to set a tone of astonishment. They had the audience rolling around in their seats with laughter.
Within a few seconds, the formally dressed guys in the choir pranced across the stage as if riding imaginary horses. Then the gals imitated their counterparts, while the audience laughed out loud, clearly amused by what was happening on the stage.
And so, the frivolity continued until the very end. It was clear from the loud applause that this was one classical performance that would never be forgotten. Somebody missed an opportunity – not using these young people in a TV reality show. They are talented and they’ve got undeniable stage presence.
