Malia Obama continues to grab attention on the red carpet, proving once again that she knows how to make a bold fashion statement.

Her recent appearance at the 2024 Deauville American Film Festival in France certainly had people talking…

…But it wasn’t necessarily positive.

On Friday (September 6), Malia, the eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, showcased her daring fashion sense with a striking outfit that caught everyone’s eye.

Known for experimenting with style, Malia did not disappoint, turning heads and sparking conversation with her unique ensemble.

The 26-year-old wowed onlookers in a black, gray, white, and red checked shoulder corset top that revealed a glimpse of her toned midriff. She paired this with a blue-and-white plaid asymmetrical skirt, creating a mix of patterns that highlighted her fearless approach to fashion. Malia completed her look with sleek, knee-high black boots that added a touch of edge to her already unconventional outfit.

Keeping her accessories minimal, she allowed her natural beauty and brown goddess braids to take center stage, radiating confidence and sophistication.

While her look was widely admired, it also ignited some playful comments online, especially after Vogue posted images of the former First Daughter to Facebook. A few critics couldn’t resist comparing her outfit to a “tablecloth,” with one quipping: “Looks like she’s wearing a tablecloth and a wrinkled one.”

Another added humorously: “Same cover I have on my dinner table at home.”

One critic even labeled the ensemble “a mess.”

However, Malia’s fans quickly came to her defense, celebrating her individuality and boldness.

“Beautiful,” one admirer commented, clearly impressed.

Another fan expressed their enthusiasm with: “Love that dress!”

Others appreciated her youthful authenticity, with one saying: “Her look was on point… young, appropriate, and the VW vibe… She executed it perfectly!”

The praise didn’t stop there; fans noted her consistent style over the years, with one declaring: “That’s always been her style. At least she’s consistent.”

Amid the buzz surrounding her daring look, Malia expressed her excitement about attending the festival to promote her short film. “I’m so excited,” she shared during a brief interview. “I mean, I’ve never done something like this, so it’s a little bit terrifying, but mostly just excited.”

In discussing her much-talked-about outfit, Malia revealed her admiration for the iconic designer behind the bold look. “Vivienne Westwood, queen,” she said with a smile, showing her appreciation for the late designer’s influence.

She added: “It’s cool. I don’t know as much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing it,” radiating her trademark blend of humility and charm.

This appearance at the Deauville American Film Festival marks another milestone in Malia’s evolving public presence. It comes just eight months after her first red carpet debut in January at the Sundance Film Festival at the age of 25, during which fans called her look “tacky”.

Nevertheless, Malia Obama continues to embrace her individuality, and I think she looks great!
