Jess is getting ready to walk down the aisle when her mother-in-law storms into her room and demands that she pay for her hair, makeup, and wedding dress. But when Jessica feels like no one is seeing her, her mother steps in to help. It’s not a real wedding without some trouble, right? So, since the theme of my wedding was old-school beauty, I knew that hair and makeup would have to be done by pros.
I picked the theme, so I didn’t think my mom, my in-laws, and my girls would pay for it. Liam and I agreed that the best way to surprise them would be for me to pay for it. That’s why I gave each of them $350. It was a nice thing to do, right? It wasn’t sweet enough for everyone, though. I was getting ready for the wedding in my hotel room. As my maid of honor and I squished me into my dream wedding dress, my almost-mom-in-law walked in.
She didn’t bother to say hello or tell me I looked good. Samantha wasn’t Samantha to me, but she was Liam’s best person. And to be honest, telling a worried bride she looks good wouldn’t have hurt. In any case, my lovely mother-in-law throws an envelope my way. “Aww, open it!” My best friend and maid of honor, Sienna, said. I thought it would be a sweet letter or a small keepsake, too, just like Sienna. Sam had a lot of beautiful old jewelry that would have fit with our theme because Liam was an only child.
It would have been something I lent.Oh no. It wasn’t as nice as I thought it would be. Instead, it was a harsh list of how much Samantha spent on her dress, hair, and makeup. Hair: $350, $300 for makeup, Dress costs $500. How did she feel about me? I was shocked that she did this an hour before I was supposed to walk down the aisle toward her son. “Um,” I started to say.
“Come on, Jessica,” my wife’s mom said, putting her hand on her hip. “Your tiny $350 wasn’t worth it! If you want to do something important, pay the whole price. She let out a gasp and looked at me.I stood there and looked at Samantha, who was wearing a beautiful dress but didn’t feel at all like a bride. My mom walked through the door to the next room before I could fight back. I forgot that she went inside one last time to steam her dress.
“That’s it, Samantha. “That’s not how you talk to my child or the woman who is getting married to your son,” Mom said. Samantha always seemed to be trying hard to get along with me because of Liam, but I always thought she didn’t like me and that there was something else going on when we were together. Samantha spoke straight out, “Olivia,” as if she were scolding her child.
“No,” my mom said. “Let me talk.” I love your son as much as my own. And I’m really thrilled that they found each other. You can’t just walk into my daughter’s room and tell her to pay your bill, though. She already showed her love and thanks by giving you money. That should be enough for you, right?” I was amazed as I watched my mom hold on to my shoes. She never got angry, and even when I was a kid, My Dad would punish us, but Mom would always be on the other side of the house, not wanting to see or hear anything.
“There is nothing Jessica owes you. If you don’t say sorry to my daughter, I will personally kick you out of their wedding. She looked at my mom with wide eyes. The dislike almost took over the room and hid the happiness. “Do you want me to call Liam?” Kindly, I asked. “Were you expecting me to call off the wedding?” Sam turned to look at me, and I saw Liam’s nose shape on her face. His eyes were the same color as hers, I saw.
I had no idea how long Samantha didn’t like me. I don’t remember when she told me she didn’t want me to marry him. “So, what will it be?” Mom asked her as she sipped the champagne I had set up in our changing rooms.Samantha then stumbled through a fake apology when she realized she was trapped, out in the open, and couldn’t get away. She said, “I’m going downstairs.” “I’ll just ensure the flowers and everything are in place.”
She left her package behind as she ran out of the room.My mom asked as she buttoned my dress, “Are you okay, honey?” “Yes, Mom. I told him, “I’m ready to get married.” I really didn’t know how I felt. I knew Samantha’s stunt wouldn’t be enough to make me leave Liam, though. And I knew he was at the end of the aisle ready to greet me.Liam and I just got back from our vacation, and Samantha hasn’t been seen or heard from much.
It was true, I told him everything that happened. He was shocked and didn’t try to explain why his mother was acting that way. I will stay away from her because I don’t know what will happen next.
