A Georgia county district attorney who violated the state’s Open Records Act was forced to pay more than $54,000 in legal fees.
The problem started when a defense lawyer for a defendant in a well-known case asked the office for records, and the agency refused.
The judge observed that the office’s opposition to the lawyer’s requests was evident. This decision comes after the prosecutor’s actions in the case were previously examined.
If a prosecutor is disqualified for wrongdoing, defendants can now request compensation for their legal bills under a new state statute.
