My stepmom Linda was always difficult. Since her marriage to my dad when I was 10, she’s made everything about herself. At graduations, birthdays, and family gatherings, she always stole the attention. I never thought she’d wear a white dress to my wedding.
Her overt suggestions before my wedding. “Don’t you think I deserve a big ceremony role?” She asked many times, fluttering her eyelids. I gently ignored her comments, believing Linda was being Linda.
Sarah, my maid of honor, came in looking pale as I prepared in my suite on the wedding day. “You won’t believe this,” she drew me to the window by the hand.
Linda emerged from her automobile in a stunning white beaded bridal dress. Heart plummeted. She tried to outdo me, not simply stand out.
Fuming, Stormed out to face her. Linda, what’s up? You can’t wear white to my wedding!”
She grinned. I wanted bride-like feelings again. White suits me, and I deserve this attention.”
I was furious. This is my day! How could you accept this?
Tom, my future husband, came alongside me before I could finish. He softly took my hand and said, “Let me handle this.” His calmness and cheeky glance made me pause.
“Linda,” he remarked with a nice smile, “you look stunning. You really do. But because this is Anna’s wedding, we don’t want any doubt regarding the bride, right?
Linda blinks, not expecting him to agree. Of sure, but—”
Tom ended her gently. “Exactly. I have the perfect answer. Make sure you *really* stand out.”
Tom whispered to an event staff member. In minutes, a server dropped a huge glass of red wine down Linda’s white gown after “accidentally” tripping.
Her gasp was Oscar-worthy.
Oh no, Linda! So sorry!” His expression showed no sorrow as Tom yelled. I believe this red hue pops on you. It’s bright and striking—perfect for you!”
Linda was too flustered to speak, mumbling while dabbing the stain. “I can’t believe it!”
“Don’t worry,” Tom responded calmly. Down the street is a boutique. I’m sure they can find you something spectacular in another hue.”
Linda stormed out, and when she reappeared in a pastel dress, the wedding was beginning.
The remainder of the day went smoothly. Tom’s fast thinking defused the situation and prevented Linda from pulling additional tricks. As we danced at the reception later that night, I said, “Remind me to thank you properly for that.”
He grins. Anything for my bride.”
Tom made sure the day was ours, even if Linda tried to steal the spotlight.
