I recall that day like yesterday. I was on the bus to buy my dream dress—the ideal pink one that would make me feel like a princess. My mom and grandma saved for months, and I clutched the envelope of cash.
Two bus station personnel boarded at the next stop, changing everything. They highlighted an elderly man in ragged attire. His vulnerability was evident as the two large men demanded a fine.
He broke my heart with his eyes. “Please, I beg you,” he shakily begged. “Trying to reach my daughter. Take her to the hospital—she’s unwell. Please.”
Thinking of him and his sick child made me feel helpless. I breathed deeply and gave the bus crew my money without thinking. “I’LL PAY HIS FINE!”
At that moment, I knew I’d chosen well. Some things matter more than prom dresses. After thanking me, he ran to rescue his daughter.
I believed that was all, but the next day, that stranger would surprise me.
I was happy and sad that night. I felt happy because I did something important. But also sad, because prom was something I had looked forward to for years, and without a dress, I felt like I wouldn’t have my ideal night.
I continued my routine the next morning, trying not to think about it. I thought prom was just one night, but that man’s daughter could have been dying. Well worth it.
I heard a knock on the door while helping my grandma fold laundry. My mom was at work and I wasn’t expecting anyone. When I opened it, I was shocked to see the same elderly man altered. A crisp button-up shirt and slacks replaced his soiled garments. His eyes, which had been filled with terror the day before, now gleamed with thanks.
“I hope I’m not intruding,” he remarked. I have to locate you.”
Unable to speak. “How did you—?”
“Your kindness yesterday saved my daughter,” he said, emotional. She was experiencing a terrible asthma attack. “If I hadn’t reached her in time… He stopped, shaking his head. Your help allowed me to take her to the hospital. A few more hours and she might not have survived, say the doctors.”
My eyes watered. I had no idea my simple kindness made such a big impact. “I’m so glad she’s okay,” I whispered.
He took out a tiny velvet package from his pocket. I don’t have much, but I couldn’t ignore your kindness. I wanted to gift you.”
I hesitated. “You need not—”
“Please,” he said, thrusting the box into my hands.
Opening it out of curiosity, I gasped. A lovely gold necklace with a heart pendant was within. It appeared old but well-kept. “This belonged to my late wife,” he sobbed. As always, she believed in kindness and assisting people. She would want you to have it.”
Totally overwhelmed. “I can’t take this,” I murmured. “Too precious.”
He grinned. “You sacrificed something valuable for a stranger. I want to give you something valuable.”
I felt cozy holding the jewelry. “Thank you,” I whispered.
He continued. “One more thing,” he said. “You have a prom, right?”
Surprised, I blinked. “Well, I was supposed to.”
He grins. My friend has a boutique. She offered to help when I told her what you did. The house has whatever clothing you want.”
Oh, I gasped. You’re serious?
He answered, “As serious as the gratitude I feel.
A tear fell from my cheek. “I know nothing to say.”
He tenderly rubbed my shoulder. “Promise me you’ll always be kind like yesterday.”
Unable to say, I nodded.
I wore a beautiful outfit to prom that night, feeling like a princess. Not the outfit was most important. The gold jewelry on my neck reminded me that compassion always returns in unexpected ways.
We may believe we’re making a modest sacrifice, yet we’re changing lives. I had no idea that giving up my prom dress money would save a life and return kindness threefold.
