Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently investigated the Social Security payments system, uncovering “significant inconsistencies.” The news comes as DOGE has taken significant steps over the past several weeks to cut wasteful spending, identify fraud, and improve the federal government’s efficiency.
Musk took to X on Monday explaining that the payments between Social Security and the U.S. Treasury Department are “insane” with an illogical process that no one clearly understands. According to the multi-billionaire, the payment files are “wild” and unreconciled. “The logic flow diagram for the Social Security system looks INSANE. No one person actually knows how it works,” he said.
Musk continued, “The payment files that move between Social Security and Treasury have significant inconsistencies that are not reconciled. It’s wild.” The head of DOGE said in another post about the inconsistent Social Security data, “As a friend of mine described it, this is like an amazing puzzle, uncovering the secrets of an ancient civilization that went extinct … except it’s still around 😂”
The Tesla founder was replying to a previous post he shared that showed millions of Americans in the Social Security database between the ages of 100 and 200 receiving social security. According to the data, nearly 1.5 million Americans between the age of 150-200 receive payments, raising serious alarms about data discrepancies.
Joking about the outrageous age range in the Social Security database, Musk opined in another post, “According to the Social Security database, these are the numbers of people in each age bucket with the death field set to FALSE! Maybe Twilight is real and there are a lot of vampires collecting Social Security 🤣🤣.”
Users piled into the comments section, calling out serious issues about the data. “394,943,364 but total population is 334M?” one person asked. Musk replied, “Yes, there are FAR more “eligible” social security numbers than there are citizens in the USA. This might be the biggest fraud in history.”
Another person called for an audit of the the system, writing, “This is a massive fraud red flag. Over 20M “people” listed as 100+ years old in SS database? Time for a serious audit. Either we’ve got immortals gaming the system or some major data integrity issues.” They added, “Proposing immediate legislation: Mandatory annual verification of SS recipients over 100. We’re losing billions to ghost claims. Time to drain this swamp and protect taxpayer money.”
