Don’t Want To Run

A new statewide poll reveals that a significant majority of Maine voters would prefer longtime U.S. Senator Susan Collins not to run for another term in 2026.

According to the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, 71% of respondents believe Collins should step down after her current term ends, while just 21% support her seeking re-election. The poll included a broad range of voters, with 84% of Democrats, 67% of independents, and 57% of Republicans expressing opposition to another term.

First elected in 1996, Collins has built a reputation as a centrist willing to cross party lines, particularly on contentious national issues. At 72, she remains one of the longest-serving senators in Maine’s history.

Despite the poll numbers, Collins has stated her intention to run again, saying she remains focused on her current legislative work but expects to campaign in 2026. Her decision could influence the political balance in the Senate, especially as both parties prepare for a highly competitive midterm election cycle.

Maine’s unique ranked-choice voting system will again play a major role in shaping the outcome. In 2020, Collins won re-election with 51% of the vote, defeating Democratic challenger Sara Gideon despite pre-election polling showing a tight race. It was Collins’ narrowest victory since taking office, and it followed criticism from some voters over specific high-profile votes during her previous term.

Maine typically leans Democratic in presidential elections, but Collins has consistently attracted a coalition of Republicans, independents, and moderate Democrats. The state’s Senate race is already being viewed as one of the more competitive races ahead of 2026.

Outside of Maine, Democrats are closely watching Senate contests in several states, including North Carolina, Alaska, and Ohio. However, flipping seats remains a significant challenge, especially in states that lean heavily Republican.

Sen. Collins is expected to play a prominent role in the Senate over the next two years, particularly in negotiations where bipartisan cooperation is needed. Her future plans—and the outcome of the 2026 race—will likely shape not only Maine’s representation in Washington but also the broader dynamics of the U.S. Senate.
