Reports poured in on Wednesday that Sen. Mitch McConnell, 82, fell down a marble staircase on Capitol Hill after casting his vote for President Donald Trump’s Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner. Allegedly, McConnell took the tumble just as he had exited the Senate floor. Reportedly, fellow lawmakers Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) quickly stepped in and assisted McConnel.

The latest fall has sparked renewed concerns about McConnell’s health after he has sustained several other falls recently. McConnell fell in December while attending a Senate lunch, after which medical staff with a wheelchair after the fall which led to a sprained wrist. Witnesses claim the senator also walked away with a cut on his face after the incident.

Users on social media quickly weighed in on the Wednesday incident. Senior Congressional Correspondent for Fox News Chad Pergram wrote, “Fox confirms. McConnell falls down Senate stairs after voting to confirm Scott Turner as HUD Secretary. Unclear about injuries. But Fox is told he appears to be ok. McConnell was helped up by Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK).”

Some users on X, questioned whether it was time for McConnell to step down from politics after the incident. “Rumors are circulating in DC that @SenMcConnell fell yet once again on the stairs of the Senate Building. Mind you these are rumors, but seeing how the former leader has tumbled 3 times in the past year alone, one must inquire if retirement is in order,” commentator Bryce Lipscomb said. The American Tribune reported on a dispute between McConnell and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) in the days before the 2024 election. McConnell reportedly attacked the MAGA movement, leading Lee to retaliate. “I think Trump was the biggest factor in changing the Republican Party from what Ronald Reagan viewed, and he wouldn’t recognize today,” McConnell previously said.

“Trump is appealing to people who haven’t been as successful as other people and providing an excuse for that, that these more successful people have somehow been cheated, and you don’t deserve to think of yourself as less successful because things haven’t been fair,” McConnell added. “Unfortunately, about half the Republicans in the country believe whatever he says. I think I’m pretty safe in saying it’s not just the Democrats who are counting the days until he leaves on January 20, but the Republicans as well.”

Mike Lee responded, “McConnell’s attacks on Donald Trump & Rick Scott are indefensible.” He added, “Those running for Senate GOP leadership posts need to weigh in on this & commit never to sabotage Republican candidates & colleagues—particularly those who are less than two weeks away from a close election.”

The Utah Republican added, “We must have clarity from the candidates running to replace McConnell on where they stand on these attacks. They must be clear on how they plan to lead the conference, and on the role of its members.” Lee said, “The Senate Republican leader is supposed to help Republicans, not undermine them. Sadly, we’ve had too much of the latter. That must end now.” He further stated, “Remember: McConnell’s superpac has withheld campaign support from Ted Cruz and Rick Scott this election season, an incomprehensible move for a Senate GOP “strong leader” who wants to keep Texas and Florida and gain a majority in the Senate.”
