After being shackled for more than 80 years, the elephant is finally freed and rests.

Although it is disturbing and immoral, many elephants are still used for entertainment purposes and paraded like circus attractions even though they are not supposed to be chained. Thankfully, awareness is rising and constructive change is imminent.

Think about the tale of Grandma Somboon, an elephant whose life exemplifies both brutality and tenacity. Somboon was taken from her native habitat as a newborn calf and forced to work cruelly in Thailand’s tourism and logging sectors for more than 80 years. She was forced to leave her family and live a life of performing in shows, begging on the streets, and providing rides, much like many other elephants. She worked day in and day out, giving up her independence to make money because of the unquenchable demand from tourists.

The Save Elephant Foundation realized they had to take action as soon as they heard about Somboon’s predicament. They made a clear call to action: “Gramma needs to be given proper care and given time to relax.” To save Somboon and get her to her last real home, we are on a rescue mission. The now 87-year-old elephant was successfully rescued by the organization in January. Even though Somboon’s physical condition was tragic, she was finally released from her chains after a lifetime of labor. She required immediate medical attention because she was malnourished, toothless, had blurred vision, was severely dehydrated, and had unhealthy skin. The most significant benefits, however, were her protection and the assurance of a respectable existence.

Somboon surprised everyone by showing up to the Elephant Nature Park sanctuary. It takes weeks for many rescued elephants who have had years of mistreatment to gain confidence and become comfortable enough to sleep down, but she wasted no time. She sought out the sand mound that had been prepared for her right away, exhausted from her difficult voyage and life, and slept quietly amidst the bustle around her. The act of simply lying down was a crucial first step in the healing process for an elephant who had lived her entire life on her feet. After years of being forced to work on harsh surfaces, older elephants require soft, cozy surroundings to rest properly since their joints are frail.

Somboon now has what she needs thanks to the refuge, including wholesome food, potable water, and comfortable soft sand beds. Despite the fact that she still needs daily care and attention, she is improving daily. Her slow recuperation is evidence of her incredible fortitude, and it’s obvious that she is now getting the freedom and respect she is due.

The tale of Somboon serves as a potent reminder of the spirit of these amazing animals. She is finally starting to find comfort and healing in a sanctuary that supports her well-being, despite a lifetime filled with abuse and suffering. Her journey symbolizes an elephant’s opportunity to live out her waning years in comfort and tranquility, as well as a rescue from physical bonds and a return of dignity.
