Jack, 10, felt bad that his mother worked seven days a week to support them. In order to get his mom a break, he visited her office and spoke to her manager.
Jack was 10 and lived with his single mother, Debra. The boy never met his dad, thus his mom was his mom and dad.
A large corporation employed Debra as a housekeeper seven days a week. She took no days off to earn extra for Jack’s needs.
Though she seldom showed it, the hardworking mom was exhausted working every day. Cleaning a multi-floor building was difficult and hurt her.
Jack once observed his mother crying on their front porch. He saw her through the window and heard her talking to her buddy on the phone. “I’m just so tired, Emily,” Debra wailed. I want to rest but can’t. I barely make enough to support Jack and pay bills. “I can’t afford days off,” she informed her friend.
Poor Jack, his mom couldn’t rest because of him. He felt bad and wanted to help her. He visited his mom’s office the next day after school.
“Hello, Jack. The receptionist asked him whether he was looking for his mom as he entered. Jack instantly shook his head.
No, ma’am. Please don’t tell my mom I’m here. “I’m here to see her boss, Mr. Jefferson,” Jack told her.
She looked astonished when told this. After Jack’s persistent pleas, she called Mr. Jefferson to alert him of his unexpected visitation.
After Mr. Jefferson let the woman take Jack to his office, Jack became nervous.
What do I owe this pleasure, young man? Mr. Jefferson asked Jack. He instructed him to sit on the couch by his table.
Sir, I’m Jack. “My mother, Debra, cleans here,” Jack added, clearing his throat. “I requested paid days off for my mom. Despite being exhausted, she refuses to take a day off since she needs the money to care for me, he said.
This astonished Mr. Jefferson. I know your mom works hard, Jack, and we appreciate her service. She refuses to take a day off, which surprises me. Is home life hard?
Jack nodded. “Just my mom and me at home. It’s always been this way because I never met my dad. Mum worked hard to pay our expenses and care for me over the years. I heard her crying on the phone yesterday about her body aching. Sir, I feel bad,” Jack cried.
A teenage voice from inside the room shouted up. Jack hadn’t noticed Mr. Jefferson’s daughter earlier. Her age matched Jack.
Dad, I understand. You resemble his mother. You work all the time and hardly see me. You hardly stay! Jack also wants more time with his mom, she informed her father.
Mr. Jefferson realized his daughter was sensible. He regretted forsaking his family to focus on work. He vowed to aid Jack and his mother before sending Jack home via the office chauffeur.
Mr. Jefferson called Debra to his office the day after Jack’s surprise visit. “Your son came here yesterday, and he said some surprising things,” he told Debra.
Debra nervously looked at Jack, wondering what he said to get a meeting with the CEO. “There’s no other way to say this, but you’re fired, Debra,” Jefferson stated.
Debra looked downcast. She was devastated and panicked. “No, Sir! My son’s words are unknown, but he’s a boy. I’m sorry for what he said. Do not fire me. I need this job!” she implored.
“Don’t be silly, Debra,” he said. “You’re one of the hardest workers I’ve met! I won’t fire you arbitrarily. Yesterday, your son visited me with my 10-year-old daughter. Both helped me realize things.”
Our kids won’t be young long, so we should invest in them and give them time. I’m taking my family on vacation, and I want you and Jack. Mr. Jefferson stated that the vacation will be fully paid. “What say?”
Confusion gripped Debra. Since she lost her work, she couldn’t afford vacation. She feared money shortages for daily expenses.
I appreciate your goodwill, sir, and I would love to spend time with my son, but I can’t afford to be unemployed. Please give me a chance, sir, I want to maintain my job,” Debra begged again.
Debra, that’s impossible. Corporate life isn’t for you. Come work for my family instead. You and Jack can live here. Mr. Jefferson suggested our garden cottage for you two.
“Work a couple of hours a day, then go to the cottage with Jack to spend more time together. You must cherish your lovely young gentleman who loves his mommy!”
Mr. Jefferson took a bunch of flowers from under his table. “This is from your son,” he beamed, offering Debra. Have fun with him at home.”
She couldn’t believe her luck. She and Jack took their first vacation in years. Every price was covered for their Bahamas vacation with Mr. Jefferson’s family. After returning, they moved into their new cottage home in a magnificent estate they only saw in magazines.
