We were watching a “Grown-Up Movie,” according to what my son told his teacher. There was no price for the truth.

On the occasion of my wife’s birthday, I presented her with a unique edition of the film Titanic on video. Around three o’clock in the morning, our inquisitive youngster saw the gift that was sitting on the table. He inquired with much interest, “Is it possible for me to watch it after nursery school?” I responded with a chuckle and said, “No, sweetheart, that’s for grown-ups like Mommy and Daddy.” He gave a serious nod, as if he had comprehended each and every word that I had uttered.

When I arrived to get him up that afternoon, his teacher was doing her best to contain her laughter and was holding back from bursting out into it. “I think it would be beneficial for you to listen to what your son has been telling everyone today,” she stated. It would appear that he spent the entirety of the day saying with great pride, “Mommy and Daddy are going to watch a movie that is appropriate for adults tonight!” The instructors were completely unaware that he was referring to the Titanic. Unsurprisingly, their imaginations went in a very different route than they had anticipated.

When I narrated the issue, the entire team couldn’t contain their amusement any longer and couldn’t stop laughing. In spite of the fact that my face went scarlet, I laughed along with them. The words of a child, which were completely innocent, prompted a wave of happiness to spread over the world. I couldn’t help but smile as we drove back to our house, knowing that this was going to be a story that we would tell for years to come. Without without making an effort, children have a way of creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The movie was finally something that my wife and I were able to watch together that evening, after we had put him to bed. When the music began, I couldn’t help but reflect on how literal and unadulterated the brains of youngsters are. From his perspective, a “grown-up movie” was nothing more than a unique treat reserved only for adults. When I heard his remarks, I was reminded of how precious and hilarious innocence can be. Sometimes the most memorable experiences in life are the ones that we have no control over.
