My life will never be the same after learning who the father of my best friend’s son is — Today’s Story

My life was dramatically altered when I promised to watch my closest friend’s son one evening. What I learned caused me to view my environment quite differently. Now that my faith in those closest to me has been shaken by the revelations, how can I handle them?

I was invited to watch my best friend Kelly’s 8-year-old kid, Thomas. My husband, Ryan, and I had been considering starting a family of our own, so I was overjoyed.

Thomas was born to Kelly at the age of sixteen, even though she was only twenty-four. She was bullied at school, so she relocated from another state when Thomas was born.

Thomas and Kelly had endured a lot, and I respected her fortitude and commitment to her son. But Ryan had never been fond of Kelly. He was unable to comprehend my decision to watch Thomas.

As I packed my belongings, I said to Ryan, “I don’t see the problem.” I was preparing to spend the night with Thomas at Kelly’s. Kelly’s firm had booked a lodge outside of town for a work function.

I persuaded her to go and unwind while I looked after Thomas, even though she had no one to leave him with.

“Why are you providing free child care for someone else?” Clearly irritated, Ryan asked.

“Kelly is my friend, and Thomas isn’t just any kid. I tried to sound cool as I answered, “I want to help her.”

“She could just hire a babysitter, why not?” Ryan went on, his annoyance mounting.

I clarified, “Not everyone can afford a babysitter, and in any case, it’s a stranger spending the night in your home with your child.”

Ryan said sharply, “You didn’t have younger siblings; you don’t even know how to look after kids.”

To begin with, Thomas is eight years old and not a baby. Second, this is a fantastic practice chance. You mentioned that you were thinking about starting a family of your own,” I reminded him, feeling a little defensive.

“Yes, but—” Ryan began to speak.

“But what?” I interrupted him. Approaching him, I wrapped my arms around his neck. “I don’t understand why you’re acting this way, and it’s only one night. Thomas is a lot like you, by the way. Or do you truly find it impossible to live without me? In an attempt to lighten the mood, I teased.

At last, Ryan grinned. “I married you with the intention of never being apart from you. Would you like me to allow you to spend the night with another man now? He responded with a joke.

I laughed and said, “The man is eight years old, and you’re a big boy who can sleep one night without me.”

Finally giving in, Ryan sighed and replied, “Okay, go.”

I gave him a kiss on the lips. I tried to keep things lighthearted by joking, “Thanks for your permission, sir, but I would have gone anyway.” After rolling his eyes, Ryan gave me a kiss in return.

I parked my vehicle next to Kelly’s house twenty minutes later. Thomas came running out to greet me. As soon as I got out of the car, he sprang into my arms.

“Hey, young man, are you up for some fun today?” I raised him up and asked.

“Definitely,” Thomas said, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. He yelled, “We’re not going to sleep all night.”

“I don’t think so,” Kelly answered as she smiled and went outside.

Thomas moaned and rolled his eyes, saying, “Oh, mom.”

“Obviously,” I replied, winking at him. “By nine o’clock, Thomas will be asleep.” He grinned broadly, his excitement unwavering.

After getting my stuff out of the car, we all entered. The smell of Kelly’s cooking permeated the home, making it feel cozy and inviting.

“Amanda, you don’t know how appreciative I am,” Kelly remarked, embracing me.

“There is absolutely no trouble. How recently did you take a break? I put down my suitcase and answered.

Kelly, attempting to appear serious but failing, joked, “Don’t ask me that, or I’ll have a crisis.”

It makes me really thrilled to do it. “Thomas is a wonderful child,” I told her.

She laughed and remarked, “I hope I feel the same when I get back,” knowing that she would still miss him.

“How did Ryan feel about you watching Thomas, by the way?” Kelly’s eyes were full with interest as she asked.

Oddly, he persisted in trying to dissuade me until the very last minute. I shook my head and remarked, “I don’t know what got into him.”

Kelly shrugged and said, “Men,” knowing all too well.

“All right, leave now. I gave her a slight shove in the direction of the door and added, “We’ll take care of everything.”

“Stop it or I’ll think you’re attempting to kidnap my child.” Of course you can, but give him back in a week. She laughed as she teased, “I’ll start missing him.”

I rolled my eyes at her drama and murmured, “Kelly.”

“All right, all right. At last, she grabbed her coat and declared, “I’m going.”

Kelly thanked me once more before bidding me farewell and kissing Thomas. When I turned around and shut the door behind her, I noticed Thomas standing there grinning broadly.

“All right, explorer. Are you prepared to enjoy yourself? I asked, feeling as excited as he did.

“Yes!” Thomas’s excitement filled the room as he yelled.

“All right, how should we start?” I clapped my hands together and asked.

“Will you play my new game with me?” With hopeful eyes, Thomas inquired.

“Obviously! I said, “Show me where it is.”

Taking hold of my hand, Thomas ushered me into the living room. From the shelf, he took out a vibrant board game. The sound of our laughter filled the house as we played and laughed for the next hour.

After a few lunches, a few dozen games, and Thomas’s endless energy, I was sitting on the couch in front of the TV in the evening, feeling more worn out than ever.

How Kelly had the stamina to do this every day was beyond me. Thomas had promised to stay up to see the movie and more, but he was fast asleep next to me.

At last, his tiny body was motionless, and his breathing was steady and gentle. I grinned and felt a surge of love for him as I gazed at his serene face.

Not wishing to wake him, I slowly rose from the couch and carried Thomas to his room. I was able to take him upstairs, though he seemed heavier than I had anticipated.

Thomas’s shirt slightly rose when I placed him in bed, revealing a birthmark that looked exactly like Ryan’s. My heart was racing as I gazed at it for a while.

I initially believed it to be an odd coincidence, but as I studied Thomas more closely, I noticed more resemblances to Ryan. In a very unnerving way, the curvature of his chin and the form of his nose began to make sense.

With a rushing mind, I went downstairs. I picked up the ice cream spoon Thomas had been using earlier, placed it in a bag, and threw it in my purse.

It would explain Ryan’s strange behavior and Kelly’s question about his reaction, but I assumed I was only dreaming. I had the unshakeable impression that there was more to this tale.

My mind kept reliving the evening’s events and my discoveries, keeping me up the entire night. I didn’t trust myself to remain composed, so I hurried out the door when Kelly came back the following day.

Ryan wasn’t there when I returned home since, as I recalled, he was out that day meeting friends. With trembling hands, I went into the bathroom and picked up Ryan’s hair off the floor. I made the decision to head straight to the clinic rather than wait.

I requested a paternity test and gave the spoon with Ryan’s hair and Thomas’s DNA. According to the clinic, the results will be available in a week. I let out a sigh, but I was powerless.

I waited anxiously for the results of the DNA test for the entire week. Ryan didn’t understand why I was acting in such an odd way, and I didn’t want to tell him since he would think I was insane if I was mistaken.

I made up reasons for my uneasiness and steered clear of his questions. My heart would beat whenever my phone buzzed because I thought it would be the clinic.

At last, I came upon a message from the clinic one evening as I was looking through my inbox. As I clicked on it, my hands shook. I inhaled deeply before opening the email.

What I had been waiting for was revealed beneath the data I didn’t understand: “Probability of paternity 99.9%.” My mind began to whirl, and my heart fell.

How could this have happened? Anger, betrayal, and perplexity were among the feelings that washed over me. What I was seeing was unbelievable.

I made the decision to deal with it immediately rather than waiting. I thus texted Kelly to invite her over. The answers I sought were urgently needed.

I made an effort to get ready for the chat that was about to take place as I waited for Kelly.

I put the laptop in front of Kelly and Ryan and set them on the couch when they got there. They gave me a perplexed look.

“What is this?” With a furrowed brow, Kelly inquired.

“A paternity test,” I stated steadily. “For Ryan and Thomas.”

“What?!” Ryan jumped up and shouted. “How did you manage to…”

I interrupted him by saying, “It doesn’t matter how I did it.” “The fact that you are Thomas’s father is what counts, and I want to know how this occurred and why you kept it from me.”

“Eight years ago,” Kelly murmured softly.

Ryan said in a low, menacing voice, “Don’t you dare.”

“So you were aware? You were aware from the start of our acquaintance that your child’s father is my husband? With a trembling voice, I questioned Kelly.

With tears in her eyes, Kelly gave a humble nod.

“Why did you remain silent?” I asked, attempting to seem calm.

“Because it made no difference.” Thomas and I are doing well, and you and Ryan are content,” Kelly added, her voice faltering.

Does it not matter? Both of you lied to me! What is the duration of your acquaintance? I turned to Ryan and asked him.

“What’s the point of knowing?” Ryan spoke without looking at me.

“Respond to me!” I yelled, my rage erupting.

Ryan answered, his voice hardly more than a whisper, “Since I first saw Kelly and Thomas with you.”

I exclaimed, “Oh my God,” as if the earth had been lifted from beneath me.

“It was in high school, Amanda. Kelly attempted to clarify, saying, “Ryan didn’t even know about Thomas’s existence until we started being friends, and we were both kids.”

“Why? Why didn’t you immediately tell me everything? My eyes pricked with tears as I asked.

Ryan said in a remorseful tone, “I was afraid of losing you.”

With a broken voice, I added, “You’re more likely to lose me now because of the lies, not because you have a son.”

“I apologize. With tears in her eyes, Kelly remarked, “We felt it was best for everyone.”

I shook my head in shock and remarked, “I can’t believe I was so blind all this time.”

With imploring eyes, Ryan said, “Please pardon us.”

“What comes next?” With my head racing, I asked.

“In what way?” Ryan asked, his expression bewildered.

I said firmly, “Thomas deserves to know who his father is.”

“No, hold on, I—” Ryan started, but I cut him off.

For eight years, you were absent from his life. I said, feeling oddly at ease, “It’s the right thing for you to become his father now.”

“Are you okay with me leaving you?” Ryan asked in a terrified tone.

“What? No. I hope that once I settle down, you will still be my husband. However, Thomas ought to have a father. “Kelly has done a great job; you have no idea how wonderful he is,” I added, with a twinge of regret.

“Perhaps we ought to inquire with Kelly about her comfort level with this.” Ryan said as he turned to face Kelly.

“Kelly?” I gave her a hopeful glance.

She responded softly, “I don’t mind, but we need to do it gradually.”

“Yes, without a doubt,” I nodded in agreement. “We’ll work it out, but I’m still really mad at you both.”

With grief on their cheeks, Kelly and Ryan cast me a sorrowful glance. I reflected on how rapidly life may change and how important it was that we proceed step by step as a team. The road ahead was long, but we would meet it head-on.
