When prom was announced at my school, I wasn’t really thrilled. To be honest, the whole affair felt a little overblown, and I wasn’t dating anyone.
Then I turned to see my great-grandmother, Alma, watching an old black-and-white film while lounging in her recliner.
“Have you ever attended prom?” I questioned her.
She chuckled. “Honey, girls like me weren’t asked to prom in my day.”

As my classmates and their dates alternated dancing with Alma after the dance, I moved aside. She was lively, in her element, talking, joking, and showing the pupils some of her vintage dancing steps.
The announcement of the prom king and queen was the night’s most surprising event. Everyone was shocked, myself first, when Alma was crowned the honorary prom queen!
A member of the student council presented her a sash that read “Prom’s Best Spirit” and positioned a fake crown over her flawlessly done hair.
With her eyes sparkling and a brilliant glow enveloping her, she wore it with pride.
As the evening came to an end, Alma conveyed her appreciation. “At my age, I never thought I’d have a night like this,” she remarked.
“Surprises can come as a surprise in life.”
The pictures went viral on social media the next day. The video “Great-Grandma Alma Takes Prom by Storm” went viral right away.
Comments were being made about how lovely it was to witness generations coming together and how it served as a reminder of what really important.
The best choice I’d ever made was to forego the drama of high school in favor of a meaningful evening with Alma. It showed me that having the guts to create moments that become priceless memories is more important in life than worrying about the ostentatious things we frequently worry about.
My eyes were awakened by that encounter with Alma, which confirmed the life lesson she had taught me at an early age: Cherish each moment because you never know what happiness it may bring.
