The loss of a key member of one of the most recognizable bands in history is being lamented by the music community. The Bee Gees’ original drummer, Colin “Smiley” Petersen, died at the age of 78.
On November 18, his current band, Best Of The Bee Gees, posted a message on Facebook confirming his passing.
The group tweeted, “We regretfully announce the passing of our dear friend Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen.”
He brought love, caring, and respect into our group and enhanced our lives. Without his bright grin and enduring friendship, we’re not sure how we’ll manage.
In addition to being the drummer, Petersen contributed to the development of the Bee Gees’ early sound as they became well-known throughout the world. His melodic sensibility and rhythmic foundation gave their harmonies depth and their performances more vigor.
Known affectionately as “Smiley,” Petersen was adored for his warmth and passion in addition to his musical ability. He was a favorite member of every band he played in and a friend to both fans and other musicians because of his laid-back demeanor and infectious smile.
It is impossible to overestimate Petersen’s contribution to the Bee Gees’ founding, even though they went on to become a worldwide sensation. The alchemy that made three brothers legendary included his beats.
One sentiment stands out as tributes from all over the world flood in: Colin Petersen infused every space he walked into with pleasure, soul, and rhythm.
Even though it was his last bow, the beat he left behind endures in every song, memory, and emotion he touched.
Smiley, may you rest in peace.
