I don’t think there has ever been a more charming or likeable Rizzo than Stockard Channing.

Channing was a great artist, and her singing in Grease was amazing, but the 80-year-old woman looks almost nothing like herself these days.

I first saw Stockard Channing in a movie called The Big Bus, which I thought was funny. But at the time, I had no idea that she would go on to have such an amazing career.

Nowadays, Stockard Channing is best known for her famous role as Betty Rizzo in Grease, an American musical love comedy movie released in 1978 that was based on the same-named 1971 musical. Many people have already said that Channing was by far the best Rizzo that has ever been played.

Many people may also know Channing from her role as First Lady Abbey Bartlet on the TV show The West Wing. People liked how quickly the experienced actor and Martin Sheen, who played President Josiah Barlet, hit it off.

Her 2020 interview with Entertainment Weekly: “It just worked.”

“We’ve always had this chemistry.” Whatever it was, it was there and wouldn’t go away. It happened by chance.”

Starring as Beth Rizzo

But let’s take a deeper look at the highlight of Channing’s career. Because in the name of honesty, she hasn’t appeared in any major motion picture since Grease, even though she has continued to act in films and on Broadway.

The 13-time Emmy Award nominee and seven-time Tony Award nominee appears to be totally fine with being most remembered for her portrayal of bad girl Beth Rizzo, one of the Pink Ladies in Grease.

But is that really the whole truth?

Back in 1973, Channing had little breakthrough starring in the TV-movie The Girl Most Likely to…, a black comedy about revenge.

“A lot of people talk about the G-word [Grease] and all of that, but back in the day, I had as many people stop me in the street about that one movie. Because it’s about revenge, and people would sit in their living rooms and go, ‘Oh, I’m the only person watching this’ or ‘this person understands me.’ I’m not kidding. It was a million years ago, and then it was the highest-rated movie of the week. Revenge always works,” she says.

According to Channing, she has only watched Grease only two times.

“I used to be grumpy about Grease because I thought it was a kids’ movie or something. But now it’s sort of amazing. I’m very proud of it,” she told The Times in 2019.

The Manhattan-born actress was 33 years old when she played Rizzo and playing a high school teenager wasn’t so easy for her.

”I was so much older than she was in life, but I could not think about that so I sort of threw myself back to what I felt when I was her age over, even younger. The complexity of adolescents and hormones and sexuality and all of that other stuff. Seeing that I really was older I think that added to the isolation of Rizzo,” Channing told Broadway World.

Channing, who became interested in acting at an early age, was thrilled when she was offered the role of Rizzo, and her performance made her a top-ranking star in the late 1970s. She earned a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Supporting Actress, but the New York native had difficulty achieving similar success after Grease.

The beloved actress was handed two sitcoms of her own, Stockard Channing in Just Friends (1979) and The Stockard Channing Show (1980), but neither was successful and her career halted.

But with her look of Elizabeth Taylor and air of calm confidence, Channing didn’t give up and she continued to work as an actress, appearing in many highly-praised movies and stage plays. Her latest appearance on the big screen came was in Angry Neighbors, which premiered in 2022.

Moving to London

In recent years, Channing has been involved in theater production in London, where she currently resides. She used to live in Maine with her partner of 25 years but moved to England in 2019.

“Living on my own here during the pandemic, I was sort of taking the ride with the rest of the country,” she told The Times

On a personal level, Channing has kept a low profile. The Grease star, who has always been ”reckless” with a restless streak in her, has no children.

She has been married and divorced four times. As for today, she finds comfort in her constant companion of several years, her dog.

Stockard Channing plastic surgery

In recent years, Channing has also received attention for her changing look. It all started in 2017 when Lorraine, a British breakfast television show, interviewed her.

Channing was there to talk about her career and the roles she’s played, but many viewers were more interested in what had happened to the Grease star’s appearance. Many were shocked at how much she had changed; there were speculations on Twitter and articles in the tabloids.

‘Oh my god what has Rizzo done to herself?’ one viewer wrote while another expressed: ‘Shocked at how Stockard Channing looked on Lorraine. Why do they mess with plastic surgeons?’

In one piece from the Daily Mail, a surgeon claimed that Channing must have used botox. But thankfully, others came out and defended Channing. I mean, we all age, and it’s nothing strange that a 80-year-old woman’s appearance changes over the years.

To me, Channing still has that “Rizzo” personality – cool and sexy! Talking with Out magazine in 2011, the actress said she does “everything I f—ing can” to stay in shape.

“You get to a certain age, and you start playing a lot of mothers. Maybe if I had children I’d feel differently, but I really hate bumping up against all these guys’ memories of their mothers, which, trust me, aren’t so hot,” she laughed and continued:

“Or maybe they watched a lot of The Golden Girls, you know? And I may be very grateful for someone who was raised on The Golden Girls. But they aren’t hanging out with women this age now, and I’d like to think the world has changed since then.”
